Refreshing Rain

I think this was Thursday, when there was a little rain. Matthew and I were very keen to get outside anyway because we'd not had a proper rainy walk, and we still haven't because this was just a very light shower in the end.

We did our weekly shop first and then left it in the car while we jogged up the path near Hest Bank for a quick couple of miles along the canal. It was lovely to see some green again after my last walk on pavements, seeing only pubs and churches. The greenery's very addictive, I must say.

Even though we're in the same house every day, Matthew and I hadn't actually spoken to each other much this week, what with me being at work every day and him being lazy and indulging his YouTube addiction. He had a lot to tell me about the videos he'd been watching and I had to keep reminding him to shut the hell up and open his eyes, which he did, but he was itching to take his phone out of his pocket and catch some Pokemon. I have, as I said the other day, failed as a mother.

Nice bit of canal, this. It's got lots of overhanging trees that keep the rain off in some parts.

A mile marker, but to what? The other side has a 7 on it. It's not 20 miles to Lancaster, so it can't be that. Maybe it's not a mile marker at all. It might have to remain a mystery because Google doesn't know either.

We saw a forest, but I don't know how to get to it, so I'll have to investigate that. It was around this point that I felt that I hadn't quite failed as a mother, when Matthew said to me, 'Mother, what kind of mythical animal would you like to be?' Of course, I said a phoenix because they're the best. Matthew said he'd be a dragon and then I wished I'd thought of that because dragons are obviously the best.

There are little paintings along the canal just here. What I mean is that the hedges open up like this and create the effect of framed pictures. We don't know about these things, but we guessed the gaps were made on purpose so the animals can trot over to the water for a little drink. Whatever the reason, the views are quite lovely. A very handsome gentleman passed us here and he agreed that the views were lovely because he said so. I thought the view became even lovelier then, but, well, social distancing. Shame.

We couldn't stop to admire the actual view for too long, though, because we had a bag of frozen chips in the car.

Moving on, I believe this is called a pontoon. You see something like this, you've got to walk on it, right? O' course.

This was where the rain started to get a bit heavier, to our utter delight. What I've tried to do here is get a photo of the rain, but that doesn't really work because rain falls too fast. You can sort of see it in the water. Obviously, you know very well what rain looks like, but you also know by now that I'm compelled to document everything.

A bit of a breeze got up next, but we were wearing our coats so it didn't bother us. We were getting quite hungry, though, and there was all of that food in the car, so we decided to turn back. We'd done quite a fast mile already, which was plenty for a quick walk. They can't all be five milers.

With those frozen chips in mind, we marched sharpish back to the car, stopping only to take a photo of this very nice field. Matthew still throws me a sideways look when he hears 'Ooh, Matthew, look at that field, it's gorgeous!' I think he worries about my sanity. 'Oh yeah,' he says, 'it's got nice ... grass and things.'

And that was the end of the walk. The chips were still frozen and we'd had a good leg stretch. Sometimes a very quick two miles feels more strenuous than a leisurely four.

Until tomorrow, which will actually be yesterday, in which we did a slightly longer walk that I will go and write about now.
