Middle of the Road

I wasn't in the best of moods when I got my trainers on for our walk this evening. I'd finished work very late and was trying to work out how the hell I was going to unblock a seriously blocked toilet without a plunger. I thought our walk would probably be a ten-minute rage stomp around the block to let off a bit of steam. But a few yards down the road, we found this hopscotch that some awesome children had drawn – it went all the way up to 100! So I did that and instantly felt better, though a bit ashamed of myself for feeling ragey in the first place.

It was already 10pm though, and we hadn't even eaten, so, even though I was cheery again, it did turn out to be a quick walk. We legged it really quickly up to the play park a couple of streets behind our house and found this:

A very small field. Not even a field – just a patch of grass, because the play park has gone. I really fancied a slide down a slide, so that was quite disappointing. I'm not keen on swings because they've always made me feel a bit sick, but I love a slide. When I'm older, I'd like to save up for a slide in my garden.

Next to the play park is Thomas's college, but it was too dark for my phone to focus, so all I could snap was this:

We couldn't think of anywhere else nice to go this late at night, so we decided we'd just walk around the roads because it was quite fun to feel a bit rebellious. I spooked Matthew a bit when I said that, if there was a zombie apocalypse, I'd walk down the middle of the road all the time because you wouldn't want to walk next to a wall in case a walker sloped out from behind it and grabbed you. Matthew kept looking over his shoulder after that and jumping at leafy rustling noises.

We walked down the middle of this road:

And down the middle of this road, where we stood at the four-way junction for a bit and just soaked up the weirdness of it all:

And also down the middle of this road:

We did have our flask of tea. We had to sit at a bus stop because there were still police cars around and we didn't want to get told off for sitting on the pavement or in the middle of the road.

No birds tonight – it was very quiet indeed. A strange sort of walk, but what I discovered tonight was that, even if I'm grumpy, going outside will sort me out straight away. Great lesson.

Until tomorrow, fellow lockdowners.
