All Roads Lead to Water

Today's was a very quick walk indeed because we had a lot of other things to do. We had a hair bleaching and styling morning, which took ages. Even though it's got nothing to do with the walk, I'll tell you what we've done because I know you're interested.

Thomas needed one half of his head bleaching, and he now has bright fushia on the right half and neon green on the left. It's stunning – my favourite of all the colours he's tried. I also tidied up his fade (which is also fushia and green) because it had grown out a lot. Then, there was quite a lot of bleach left, so I decided I'd let Matthew go blonde – this was a little naughty of me because I knew that, being very dark, Matthew's hair wouldn't go properly blonde on its first bleaching, it would go ginger. And so it has done. Apart from the patches at the back that Thomas completely missed and which are still dark brown. I let Thomas do Matthew's bleaching because he's usually good at it, but he also doesn't really like his brothers, so he probably left these patches on purpose. Anywaaaaay, Matthew is now mostly ginger and will have to be bleached again before he goes a nice purple – at which point, the schools will probably open again and he'll have to have it dyed brown. Then, finally, Thomas did my massive roots and I am once again completely peroxide yellow, ready for a big streak of pine green at the front when I've got more time. Phew! Done.

After that, I noticed we'd completely run out of food again so a trip to Asda was in order because I still can't get a delivery slot. If we were not going to be walking at midnight, we needed to combine our shopping trip with our walk. So that's what we did. And it occurred to me, rather belatedly, that all of our walks do seem to lead to water. From Asda, you go down this path:

Which takes you to the sports centre (being used as a food bank at the moment). There's this very interesting looking construction that I'm thinking I'd like to add to my list of things to try out after lockdown. Some kind of zip wire thing?

Just past the sports centre, there are a few football (soccer, if you must, US readers!) pitches and then the river. See, nothing is very far from anything else in this town.

But we didn't want to be quite that lazy and just nip down to the river that very short way. No, we found a little path that begged to be explored. You see some woods, you've gotta go in them, right?

Ooooooh, this was looking a lot like another way into Narnia. How exciting!

Yep, looking very promising. Any minute now, we'd be looking for talking animals again.

Ah. Maybe not. Here we have the bits that I've carefully not photographed up until now. But seeing as this was a very short walk and I had very little to show you, I decided now might be the time to be honest and show you what a dump I live next to. Most of the length of the river that we've walked since we started this adventure looks like this, with discarded plastic bottles and all manner of unidentifiable rubbish.

And this kind of thing:

And that was the end of our explorings today because we were back on the cycle track (you remember, the one that's possibly popular with doggers?). I did say that, at some point, I was going to use this track to try out a bit of running because it's exactly a mile long so quite useful for tracking your progress week by week. But I don't think I'm ready for running – actually, I'll be honest, I don't think I want to run ever because it just makes me feel sick.

Just before we popped down to the river itself, we spotted this weirdness. We couldn't work out this little puzzle at all. I'll just zoom in in the next shot for you and see if you can work out what's going on.

So here, zoomed in, what you're looking at is a fallen branch that's become all covered in dandelion seeds. But what we couldn't work out was why. Why and how had the dandelion seeds formed a sort of blanket? We looked around us and there were a few dandelion clocks, but not enough to account for this strange covering. But why would they all collect in this one relatively small area?

We couldn't work it out so we gave up. The Scandinavian houses were still there so we went for a little sit down on the river bank, wishing we'd brought our flask of tea.

Nice. A little bit duller today than we've become used to over the past couple of weeks, but still lovely. Have you noticed that we haven't had a day of rain yet. My weather app says we will next week, and I'm still looking forward to a rainy walk.

One more snap of the houses and the river and some mud, and then I couldn't really put it off any longer because my tummy was rumbling really loudly.

Back to Asda, with a holy light guiding our way, shining down on this sacred place of plenty ... though still not of handwash. This picture reminds me of Monty Python.

'Now knock it off!'

Until tomorrow, you crazy kids.
