Lockdown Constitutional

Today is the UK's first proper day of lockdown. I'm not really short of things to do because I work at home. My house is also the most disgusting pit of filth because I have three lazy sons. We're going to work on that over the coming weeks, so I've plenty to keep me occupied until the end of the lockdown and beyond.

But no one wants to read about spring cleaning. Well, probably some people do, and that's fine. Maybe Kim and Aggie have a blog they can go and read. This one is only going to document my daily walk. My lockdown constitutional.

Make no mistake, I'm a completely lazy person who never takes any exercise, so this is quite something for me to commit to. Before today, I'm not entirely sure of the last time I left the house for anything other than food shopping – and that was only because there were no Asda delivery slots available last week.

So, at around 9pm last night, right after Boris's special address to the nation about the new measures to slow/halt the spread of this bloody awful Covid-19, I said to myself, 'Warrior Queen, you need to shift yer arse – Boris says you can have one bit of exercise a day, so you should take that freedom and do something with it'. So here I am.

We live something like 200 yards from the river and we never go anywhere near it. Granted, it's not the prettiest stretch of river you'll ever see, but it's got a little bit of wildlife on it and in it, and there are, like, bits of pretty driftwood and rocks and what have you. We can stretch our legs for a bit and breathe some fresh air, and that's more than a lot of people can do at the moment – I'm very grateful it's there.

I took my youngest son Matthew with me on this first auspicious occasion. James was deep into a heist on GTA and couldn't hear me when I asked him if he fancied a walk, and Thomas was busy faffing with his hair.

This is what the river looked like today.

Like a river. So that's nice. It was good to see it was still there, after all these years. I don't think I've walked along it since about 2006. There were some birds flying low close to the bank, catching flies I would presume – I can't tell you what they were because almost all of my bird knowledge has leaked out of my sieve-like brain. I'll try to find out and I'll also try to get a photo next time.

No dead sheep here today. I do remember that there was a dead sheep last time I was down this way. I didn't actually expect to see the same dead sheep – I'm not an idiot. But I did wonder whether there might be a different one. There wasn't.

Until tomorrow, then. I aim to walk a little further than I did today. I also aim to have more children with me, the lazy gits.*

Stay safe and well.

* This is unfair of me, as Thomas is not lazy at all and has been out on his bike this evening, getting his quota of exercise for the day.
